A week later, my heat intolerance appeared again. A block and a half from home, I started to droop. Vidya was working that day. She didn’t handle it as well as Chuby had.

“Jen, are you okay?”

Because my head hung forward, I couldn’t answer her.

She clutched her hands. “Who can I call, Jen? Should we go to the hospital?”

She had stopped the chair in the full sun, so my condition only worsened as she freaked out.

“Should I go into one of these houses? Jen, answer me!”

I wanted to scream, “Hold my head up and I will answer you!” but I couldn’t.

After a few minutes of fretting, she finally thought to hold my head up. I could feel the sweat trickling down my brow. I squeaked out, “Just take me home.”

Once I was in the cool, dark condo, my abilities flooded back. I could talk like normal. I could hold my head up unassisted.

Vidya had only worked for me part-time for a few weeks. She couldn’t have anticipated my reaction to the sun. I should have warned her what might happen. Soon after, Vidya asked me to give her a reference. I was happy to do so.
